Visiting The Villages?
Start with these 6 experiences

What to see, where to explore, and how to get a feel for life here during your visit.

Make a little time to explore

The Villages is much more than any one town square, neighborhood, or recreation center. If you’re visiting for the first time, one of the best things you can do is slow down and experience a few different sides of the community.

Here are six ways to get started.

01 — Explore the Town Squares

Each town square has its own personality, so don’t stop after seeing just one. Walk around, grab something to eat, listen to the music, and notice how the atmosphere changes from one area to another.

Spanish Springs, Lake Sumter Landing, Brownwood and Eastport each offer a different glimpse of life in The Villages. If you have time, experience more than one.

02 — Step Inside a Recreation Center

Don’t just drive past the recreation centers. Go inside.

Many of them have distinctive themes, architecture, artwork and displays that reflect different parts of history and Florida life. Eisenhower Recreation Center is especially memorable for its military history and memorabilia, while Everglades Recreation Center has an entirely different lodge-inspired character.

They’re also active gathering places where residents meet for clubs, games and activities. Visiting a few gives you a much better sense of everyday life here.

03 — Explore the Natural Side

It’s easy to focus on golf courses and town squares and miss just how much nature there is throughout The Villages.

Take a walk along a preserve, boardwalk or shaded path. Explore places such as Everglades Pond, the Black Lake Walking Path, or one of the wildlife preserves, and keep an eye out for herons, egrets, sandhill cranes and other Florida wildlife.

It’s a quieter side of The Villages—and one that’s worth making time for.

04 — Drive Through Different Neighborhoods

One of the best ways to understand The Villages is simply to drive around.

Explore an established area such as the Villas of Spanish Springs or Bridgeport at Lake Sumter, then compare it with communities such as Monarch Grove or Charlotte. Drive through villa neighborhoods as well as areas with larger homes and mature landscaping.

Don’t look only at the houses. Pay attention to the trees, streets, nearby recreation, shopping and overall feel of each neighborhood. The differences can be surprisingly significant—and seeing them in person can help you discover what feels right for you.

05 — Spend an Evening Out

Stay long enough to see what happens when the sun starts going down. Visit one of the town squares for live music and dancing, have dinner, or simply find a place to sit and enjoy the evening. Eastport offers a waterfront setting, while Brownwood and Spanish Springs each have their own distinctive atmosphere. Sawgrass Grove is another fun place to experience live entertainment, dining and gathering with friends.

Don’t rush through this part of your visit. Give yourself time to stay awhile and take it all in.

06 — See a Florida Sunset

Before your day is over, find a beautiful spot and watch the sunset.

Central Florida can put on quite a show, and after a day spent exploring neighborhoods, recreation, nature and evening activities, it’s a wonderful way to finish your visit.

Sometimes the quieter moments are the ones that tell you the most about how a place feels.
